The Panoramic Screen was part of a series of installations that we created for the Experimental Media and Performance Art Center (EMPAC), exploring the concept of self-presence. In a virtual environments, we project our so-called-selves into computer-reconstructed other selves. In a language comprised of programs, rules, commands, and networked interactivity, we perform a sense of presence to others. Digital worlds – particularly networked pervasive virtual 3D environments – provide useful contexts for critically and imaginatively studying our behaviour in this new reality.

Immersion allows visitors to transcend the physical experience of being an audience, arriving at a more psychologically immediate appreciation of their hybrid presence. We began research to produce a greater immersive experience. Working at EMPAC, we reimagined our earlier projects occupying a 360° physical space, and presented a series of performance-lectures demonstrating our virtual worlds on a panoramic screen.
